So Saturday July the 12 we drove from Bujumbura (the capital of Burundi) to cibatoke (google it). It's a hour an a half drive down the bumpiest road that would never pass an inspection in Canada. You drive 20km an hour for half of the way because there are so many massive holes in the ground. By far the most painful road trip we have taken so far. In cibatoke we were working with an orphanage run by the organization youth for Christ. My favorite part about going here was the stability. Most places we stayed on or two nights but we stayed there 5 nights. There are 24 kids staying in this orphanage and every evening for a few hours we got to play games with the kids and spend time with them. I found it really frustrating not being able to talk to the kids but we found ways to have fun with them despite the language barrier.
While at the orphanage we spent a few days helping out. We primed the walls of the classrooms and we painted the walls of the clinic. The guys also spent an afternoon getting to know the community by playing a game of soccer with them while the girls hung out at the orphanage.
I think the thing I got out of our time in cibatoke was relationship. We all built relationships with these kids and the people who worked at the orphanage and it was so hard to say goodbye. Everyone was so lovely and they loved us with everything they had. They really taught us to love with all that you are, which looks different in different situations.
Today is Sunday and we are now in Rwanda. This week we will be visiting the genocide memorial and working with an organization that I always forget the name of. Thanks for following my blog. I will be sure to post again this week .
