Welcome back to my blog! I am excited to announce I begin my journey to Africa in less than a week! My flight leaves on July 3rd at 7am and its about a 24 hour trip with a layover in brussels!
This past month we had a hot dog fund raiser for souls of the feet, as well as a few meetings for our trip. For the first meeting we applied for our visas and discussed some of the schedule and for the second meeting we had cultural lessons.
Schedule wise we have learned that in Burundi we will be spending a few days building houses, we will be visiting an orphanage and we will be visiting the coffee station that the founder of souls of the feet started. (Check out http://www.goodcoffeeco.com/ for more information!) and in Rwanda we will be visiting the genocide memorial.
In the culture lesson we learned some basic phrases:
Hello/peace be with you: Amahoro
My name is: Jewe Nitwa
Water: Amazi
Urakoze: Thank you
My favorite part about their language is that all of the vowels make the same sound.
A= ah E=ay I=ee O=oh U=oo
So you can look at any word and figure out how to pronounce it easily! (Amahoro= ah mah hore oh)
We also got to try some common Burundi meals, cooked in the same style as they do in Burundi. We tried rice and beans, ugali (cornflour and water cooked until dough like), samosas, and fried potatos. The meal was cooked for us by the lovely lady in the picture to the right, who was born and raised in Burundi. She was so touched that a group of young people are travelling so far to visit and serve in her country. The meal was delicious and made me excited for the foods we will be trying in Africa!
On another note I am very excited to announce that I have raised all the money I need! The flights have been booked and the visas have been approved! The only thing left to do is buy the travel necessities (medications, clothes that can get wrecked, flashlights, plug adapters ect) and pack my suitcase!
It has been wonderful seeing all the support come in! Through money but more importantly through prayer and encouragement. Please continue to pray for us throughout this journey!
prayer requests: safety, catching all our flights, team unity, good health, opportunities to serve and love people, provision, seeing God at work, and wisdom.
Thank you so much! I will try and post as much as I can throughout the trip but unfortunately wifi is not as common as it is in north america and it is not as cheap!
